coomon ignition problems?
I have tried swapping out everything I can think of but one cylinder front or back wont fire with the other one I notice when I put the timing light on the spark moves retard/advanced and not constant on one spot could points cause this issue?
my manual burned up in a camper fire is there a special way to time these I'm missing?
How I tried is front cylinder tdc/spark mark aim distributor rotor to the number one place on the distributor start up move distributor until mark lines up with spark mark
also at night I get an arc from the coil but only when it goes to fire on the missing cylinder tried different coils different points tried different wires
what my observation is that i don’t have the cap lined up with the bumps on the points cam and its activating the points/coil when rotor isnt pointing at a wire any ideas here im stumped on this.
also i can get back or front cylinders to fire by changing timing around just not together
oh i have a early model MC I got a new cap from tsc 1831624 http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/d ... al-12-volt and the towers are a little different also but still same issue with new cap 12 v- negative ground

These old machines were designed for 6v. Order a 6v cap. You'll see the terminals on it have a 90 deg difference with the 12v one. No way to time this. I had a problem with this when i bought my 1st 440. I knew it was a 12v battery, so i ordered the 12v cap. When i compared both they had this difference. I ordered the 6v, put it on and that was it.

The poles of the 6 v cap are perpendicular to the holding clips. On The 12v cap you ordered they are parallele. I don't know why they sell 12 v caps...

All the vertical distributor Waterloo tractors use the other cap. Their combined production probably exceeds the crawlers. This is a common problem with retailers that don't know or care that there is a difference. The correct cap is readily available, I stock several of them, just put two on in the last two days.

coomon ignition problems?
I have 2 different distributor bases one might be from a later model is there a way to tell if the other is 12v ?
I also tried the old cap and there wasn’t nothing wrong visible with the old cap but it still misses with the old cap
the tractor was running fine and i took it up on a hill a decent grade and it stalled out because of water that had gotten where the advance weights are and on the grade was able to short the points out after drying things up it started to not run right after that.

I don't believe that the dist from a Waterloo will fit, but never really thought about it.

its the same distributor as the one that was in it they look identical and do fit
i wasn’t sure if they changed to a 12 v for later model mc's because i have a early model

No, they never changed, all of the two cylinder gas crawlers are 6 volt.

I had a similar problem from condensation. A light shot of wd-40 into the bowels of the distributor has solved the irregular or rough running.... it stalled out because of water that had gotten where the advance weights are and on the grade was able to short the points out after drying things up it started to not run right after that.

update new cap new points same issue it backfires on occasion though the carb and exhaust changed out the carb same thing set timing on front cylinder to dc/spark mark its still very erratic it acts like it wants to run then it sputters out and falters it was a little low on water
no water in the oil a little bit of blow by I’m thinking maybe valve issues or head gasket maybe also i set points to 020

Its funny this topic about the distributor cap came up I just had the same situation. I bought some parts off a guy and he had a new cap and I wanted to tune up a 420 I gust got. It sounds like it has a miss or timing was off That's when I realized the cap was different so thanks for shedding some light on this Ron
Witch tractor would the 12v cap fit? Just curious.

I think I'm going to pull the head on it and take a look at the valves and seats it seams a little low on compression when i cranked it over my hand

No but I will check it more and maybe replace the wire there is a square plastic thing where the bolt goes though is there more to it?
also looking at the spark plugs one is dry and firing the other is semi wet but not soaked like a very rich but firing spark plug and its weird i get backfires though the exhaust and though the intake intermittently its baffling to me lol
