coomon ignition problems?

Post by fictional31m » Fri Mar 29, 2013 10:02 pm

any clues to check would help ill try my best to explain how it runs it starts up like normal no backfire as the engine picks up speed it falters giving it more throttle it falters worse full throttle backfires though carb and sometimes exhaust sounds almost like an airplane in the movies when its going down smoking and sputtering

Paul’s comments about the insulator bushing are worth checking into. You may not visually see any deterioration of the insulation, so put some tape around it to test it. Next time you order parts you should replace the insulator blocks in any case.

Have you taken the points plate off and inspected the mechanical advance? Broken advance springs, stuck weights, or other problems will result in the symptoms that you have described. Moisture in the advance area is another culprit. Blow it out with compressed air and use some electrical contact spray. Gil

common ignition problems

I'm unfamiliar with the M's distributor, but if there is a bushing on the shaft that is worn, it will change the point gap randomly and make it impossible to time correctly. Just grab the rotor and see if there is any side movement. gregjo1948

coomon ignition problems?

Ok so I tried just about everything checked advance springs different condenser
So I pulled the head and it looks like I have some cross fire between the 2 cylinders blackish darkened area between them.

also my exhaust valves didn’t look to great either lots of carbon on the seats I could barely make out where the valve was seating

Lots of course carbon on the back cylinder piston top
fine carbon on the front piston top I also noted one push rod had a slight bend to it and the inner rocker arms had a little play
I'm going to see Monday about some machine work on the seats/valves just hope the bottom end don’t fall out from an increase in compression from a work over on the seats

coomon ignition problems?

So I made it to the machinist and he took a look at the valves and said "I'm surprised it ran"
The intakes are shot and exhaust had a lot of pits both sets very little margin left.
So I need to get some new valves
I was looking at them on a few sites and i was wondering if there is a big difference in valves each have different prices 119,98,150 they all say for an M tractor but have different part numbers I can link the sites if its its needed/ok

I stock valve train kits for the M, $110. I would prefer you don't link to any sites, I feel no need to advertise for my competition, they don't advertise my stuff.
I agree, it is apart, ring it and put in bearings while you are there. Also have the head magged, planed, and hard seats installed.

coomon ignition problems?

I think my father is on the verge of selling it it lol it broke down just as we was getting ready to work it.
Seams its just old and needs to be redone Its hard for him to understand old equipment is like this.
I agree with a total overhaul but I don’t think my father wants to put that kind of money out for a total overhaul I know bottom ends fall out when the upper parts get redone I think the machinist was just going to cut the old seats I dunno about hardened seats?

You aren't going to hurt the bottom end of one of these by doing the top end, no way.
You need a gasket set any way, rings are $80 I think, rods $50 or $60 for the pair maybe, not talking a lot of cost.
