Enine miss at operating temp

Post by apowalski » Mon Apr 15, 2013 2:19 pm

I installed a 180 thermostat and a mechanical temp gauge on this dozer. When I start it, it runs great with no misses until it reaches around 180 and the t-stat opens. This dozer was in pieces when i bought it and i put it all together with new components. So it has never had a 160 t-Stat. Any ideas out there as to why it misses at 180? Thanks, AdamP North Pole, Alaska.

My guess is that it is a coincidence, first thing I would replace is the coil. Second option is valve clearance.

Usually the coil is temperature sensitive.
Yes, could be a tight valve as well.
Found some with a wiring issue due to temp also.
Due to your location, Way up North...
Could be the frost forming on the intake restricting the fuel air mixture.
Get it warmed up and check for frost on the intake. If there is just shut it down and watch it go away. Restart and clear till next cold start.

Should have clarified that, I don't mean the engine temp has any effect on the coil, I am assuming the coil is bad, is heating up due to resistance, and is therefor misfiring when hot. That it happens to occur at the same time as the engine warming up is I believe purely coincidence.
If you did not, I would also replace points and condenser, and check the power wire from switch to coil.
