440 icd oil pan

Post by 10fords » Fri Apr 19, 2013 7:41 am

I took the belly pan off my 440 icd to clean out the years of dirt and rat nests, and after I was finished pressure washing everything it appears that my oil pan is rusted through and leaking! I guess the crud was keeping it plugged for all these years. My question is- what oil pan will fit? Will any detroit diesel 2-53 work, or does it have to be from a 440? Thanks- Scott

The only places JD used the 2-53 Jimmy were the 435 and 440I wheel tractors and the 440ICD crawler. Any of those pans should work, I would think. Need to check with a Detroit Diesel truck engine repair place to see if they have any info on other uses of the 2-53.
If you have the pan off perhaps a welder could flow some brass across your rusted places, or even replace parts of the pan bottom metal.
I really doubt either a 2-71 or 3-53 pan could be made to fit.

Thanks shinnery. what other applications was the 2-53 used on other than John Deere? And would they have the same oil pan? I'm sure my pan could be repaired, but I would rather get another one if it was readily available.

2-53 was used in more applications than you can even begin to think of, I would hate to guess how many thousands and thousands of them were built. The main question would be if the Deere pan is the same as the others.

That is the million dollar question! Any Ideas on what else used the 2-53 so I can keep my eyes open for a donor? Thanks- Scott

Tons of military applications, tons of marine applications, lots of generators, stationary power units. Just type a search into google and see what comes up.

10fords,
Good luck finding a good oil pan. Mine was rusted through in places and I searched and searched for a replacement and didn't have much luck. I'm not sure how many of the other 2-53 applications used the same pan but I know there's a lot of different parts on the JD 2-53.
I ended up just putting a new bottom in mine, maybe one day I'll find an original.

You should be able to use the part number from the Deere parts manual I think.

If I can't find one I will probably have my neighbor who is a fabricator fix it for me. In the meantime I'll keep my eyes open for a replacement.

If the pan is just porous sand blast it,
clean it up well and use marine epoxy to give it life again.
I have done this many times with oil pans and gas tanks.
