Need to rebuild idler wheel assembly on a 40C

Post by Rowcrop » Tue Apr 30, 2013 12:30 pm

I am trying to rebuild a 40C (SN 61176) with an extremely worn out front idler wheel assemblies. The front wheels wobble so bad that, in hard turns, the track tries to (and has) come off.

Looking at the parts book, there is supposed to be some “Idler Hubs” (TE20YT, two each for each side). What are these as I don’t have these items? Are they pressed into the wheel?

What are my options to rebuild these assemblies, both the wheels and brackets? I found a full set of assemblies that someone wants to sell but they are almost as worn out as mine at a cost right up there with what I paid for the entire crawler!

You have them, just not recognizing them. They are the tapered cones on each side of the idler. They are obsolete as far as I know, sorry.

Jtrichard -- On the 40-Series crawlers, there was a design change after SN62263 which included proper bushings, seals and such. I assume this design was carried on to later models.

Lavoy -- I am confused. Per the Model 40 Parts Catalog (PC-862), Page 95-2, the Hubs in question are part of the Idler Wheel Assembly. The tapered cones are shown as part of the left and right brackets.

You can get them from John Deere TE20YT for 279.81 for each one.

They are pressed into the wheel and are replaceable.

I believe so.
I have a pattern made to get them cast, just working on a foundry.

Lavoy -- Just what are the hubs -- bushings between the cones and the idler or bushings between the shaft and the idler? Thanks.

My cones are really worn and, if the hubs are bushings between the cones and idler, then I don't think it is going to work on my machine without welding the cones up and turning down.

How do I post a picture on this forum so you can see what I am working with?

Hubs are a cast cup, idler bracket is a cast cone if that makes sense.

Hi Rowcrop, the cones in my brackets were also worn, so I bored them out and made a steel bushing and pressed it into the bracket so it fit the new axle. There is a set screw or bolt in the bracket that fits into a dimple in the axle to prevent it from spinning. The idler wheel itself has replacable bushings pressed into it. There is shim stock under the locking plates to set the side lash on the idler wheel. Thats how my 40c is set up but it has a lot of 420 parts on it so it could be different from yours! Hope this may help, good luck on your project! Randy from Michigan

He is working on a 3 roller 40, completely different setup, no bushings, no seals, no shims, just cast iron on cast iron.
