JD40C Reverse problem

Post by rogersach » Wed Jun 19, 2013 4:44 am

I just picked up a JD40C and it runs good except for the reverse, you can hold it in position and it will move however it will pop out with the least resistance . It does not seem to lock in reverse gear at all. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

JD40C reverse problem

Possibly a bent fork,or maybe a detent problem. Pull the top cover off and take a look. gregjo1948

40c reverse

Most likely you have a badly worn second- reverse gear.Pull the transmission cover and look at the condition of the teeth. If the teeth are worn bad enough they will ramp out of mesh under load.If you don't find
any other reason for failure to stay in gear like a bent shifter fork or
a detent problem in the cover look forward to a teardown of the transmission as that is the only way to correct a gear problem.

Bad bearing or tapered gear, almost never a shifter.

jd40c reverse problem

Post by gregjo1948 » Sun Jun 30, 2013 5:17 am

When I got my 1010c, it jumped out of 2nd gear. Somebody had installed a bolt with a nut into the front, top, right trans hole. It's supposed to have a stud. The original stud had stripped threads in the housing. They had installed a bolt thru and tightened it with a nut inside the trans.. When selecting 2nd gear, the nut didn't allow the gear to fully engage, causing it to pop out. Perhaps there is something causing your reverse to not fully engage. gregjo1948
