Wet Clutch vs. Dry Clutch

Post by whiteclipse16 » Tue Sep 03, 2013 8:11 am

This might be impossible to do, and might have already been discussed.
I'm curious as to why the 440, 430, 420 etc. steering clutches can't be made into a wet clutch system.
I've worked on many 4wheelers and they use what seems to be the same setup as the steering clutches. They don't use any pressurized oil or anything special like that. Also, the new crawlers have wet clutch designs.

My question is, would it require different clutch fiber material or heavier pressure plate?

I know motorcycle steel discs have small dimples and/or other marks in them. Not sure if the steering clutch steels would need to be this way or not.

most definitely different material for clutches and brake lining then may need more pressure on the clutch pack

That's what I thought.
Is it something you'd be interested in looking into Lavoy?

The cost for something like that on a one off basis would be astronomical. The other fear I would have is contamination of the fluid over time with no filtration.
I have read that Jesse Lindeman tried it on the BO Lindemans first, and finally had to abandon the idea.

I agree on both accounts.
However, my thought was if it worked then it would definitely not be a one-off sale.
The fluid would get contaminated but would just need changed on an interval no different than engine oil possibly.

How do the newer crawlers like 350's 450's etc. do it? Is all that fluid ran together with the tranny and filtered?

Correct, filtered and cooled as well I believe, plus the clutch housing are sealed so no real outside contaminants.
