440 ICD 12v Battery size???

Post by Flurrdogg » Thu Sep 26, 2013 4:03 am

Hello everyone I just purchased a 1959 John deere 440 ICD 2-53 crawler loader..
It did not have a alternator or Battery So I purchased a Standard single pole alternator with regulator built in and Tried using a 800 CCA Battery, It turns it over 3 times at 3 second intervals and then dies. Any Suggestions on Battery Size or Cranking Amps?? I Want this dozer Running ASAP any Help would be greatly Appreciated... :D

I think you have a big enough battery. It sounds like the battery is no good. Rob one from another machine or vehicle and give it a go. gregjo1948

For my 2010 diesel crawler a Group 31 battery is recommended (I think it is 1100 CCA) but I would think yours has sufficient CCA if a tractor battery.

Have you checked all of the connections? Dirty or corroded battery clamps and grounds can make it seem like it is drawn down. Have you checked the battery itself using a load tester? Sometimes a battery will look fine using a voltmeter but be bad when checked with a battery load tester.

If those suggestions don't work, I would suggest a commercial/tractor battery. They have larger plates and can better handle initial draw and extended cranking over a standard automotive battery as well as vibration that can crack plates on a standard automotive battery. You can tell the difference in the extra weight of a tractor battery.

Battery is junk or starter is junk, or bad cables/connections, it should spin on way less amps than that.

Hey guys thanks for the input. The engine spins over slowly tried starting it with ether today with no luck. I am thinking that my blower might have crapped the bed. Any good ways of checking this problem out easily? I placed hand over blower (with elbow off) and cranked motor Im not feeling much suction like I would think there should be. I heard 2-53 rebuild blower kits are fairly in expensive. Any advice would be great. thanks guys.
