1010CID miss fire

Post by gregjo1948 » Tue Oct 01, 2013 8:20 am

My 1010 misses on one cylinder when not under a load. When throttling up, it runs up smooth, but after rpms plateau, it randomly drops one cylinder. When it drops the cylinder, it gives a slight puff of blue smoke. Could it be an injector malfunction? Also it has no tachometer , but I don't dare run it wide open because it sounds like it will really over wind. The governor seems to be working as it should, when starting to labor it will open the throttle. I don't need to run it full throttle anyways, because it has enough power in second gear to spin both the tracks. I am just curious about the over rev. Thank you guys, gregjo1948

Sounds like a vacuum leak on that cylinder, assuming it is a gasoline engine. There is less vacuum when the throttle opens.

im guessing that since you put 1010c"ID" its diesel .......blue is generally engine oil ..you sure its not white? that would be unburnt fuel ...when it starts up does one cly. take awhile to fire?

His question "injector malfunction?" also sorta indicates diesel. Pretty sure there were no fuel injected gas 1010Cs. Just a theory of course.

This is a diesel. I put CID by mistake. Should be ICD I believe. The small puff of smoke appears to be blue, as if, it is oil burn. It's very slight so , it may be white mixed with the normal diesel exhaust. It doesn't limp when the engine is under any work. Basically, when the governor is open. gregjo1948

I would lean towards a bad injector seeing as how it is only one.

i would agree with Lavoy on the injector .... as for CID VS ICD it would be 1010C DIESEL ....440 WOULD BE 440ICD

Thanks on the injector replies. I'll isolate the limping cylinder and swap injectors with a healthy one to confirm the diagnosis. gregjo1948

One of the remote infrared thermometers for checking exhaust manafold temperature is a pretty good troubleshooting aid. Misfiring cylinder is cooler. HTH

Thanks Bryce but I don't have one. I think I'll be able to locate the limper by cracking open injector lines 1x1 and watching for engine reaction. It has worked before on a Mack truck I had. gregjo1948

I would say its a injector malfunction you can re time the injector and go from there, Both exhaust valves and injector should be re timed then replace injector and re time again. If it still puff's blue smoke your rings may be bad...
