I think when you push the pedal to extreme, the springs will reach their full compression. gregjo1948

That may be correct.
The reason I brought it up is because with the worn out flywheel, pressure plate and driven disc the clutch pedal linkage was adjusted to be as short as it could be to compensate. After adjusting the linkage I have about 1 1/2" to 2" of free play, then about 2" of travel before I hit some sort of a stop. Possibly the fingers again the pressure plate or springs bottoming out. My 40U & 430C both seem to have more travel after the throwout bearing contacts fingers. Just seems a bit odd.

Correction to my previous post...
When I got home tonight I decided double checked my linkage adjustment, since I had not actually gotten a tape measure out and taken the time to set it per the manual, shame on me. The 440 service manual says free play should be 1". When I checked mine I was at 3 1/2" of free play and 2 1/2" of travel after the throw out bearing contacted the fingers (6" total travel). Once I set the free play to 1" I had 5" of travel after the throw out bearing contacted the fingers (still 6" total travel). Much better!!

Re: your clutch
I have a main clutch replacement coming up on my 40, so...what's this special gauge? I thought that was for the steering clutches?vtjoe wrote:we assume that you have "The Guage" for performing the proper adjustments.....it is a must have-- contact Lavoy for one if you don't

I believe, if the pressure plate has adjustable fingers or levers on it, you need to use "the gauge" to set them. Just use a different area of the gauge.

The service bulletin regarding this is listed in the FAQ's section here, but in a nutshell, ALL pressure plates in John Deere crawlers up to at least 450's need to be adjusted once the clutch pack is assembled.
