Picture request... 350B Starter Solenoid

Post by GRWeldon » Sun Feb 09, 2014 7:59 am

Howdy folks. As far as I can remember, when I replaced the starter on my crawler, there were not any wires that came off the small terminal that faces the outside. There were only two wires that were attached to the small terminal that faces inward. The battery is the large cable in the center, but I'm speaking about just the small terminals.

Would it be possible that one of you might be able to post a picture of the connections on the solenoid of their 350B (or others that would be typical).

It appears from the electrical schematic in the technical manual that there is a wire that comes off each of the terminals. I figured I'd just go the easy route if y'all can get me a picture. Other than that, I may have to pull out my test meter and track down the proper wires (If I am able)!

Any help would be appreciated! Next time I'll take a picture before I start disassembling.

I have a straight 350 and only see one terminal on the starter solenoid (not counting the HOT wire). AFAIK the 350 and 350B are the same for the most part. Someone may have replaced the solenoid with an aftermarket one. I put one on my 56' Ferguson and the aftermarket one had two terminals but I only needed one.

GR is yours gas? or diesel? gas could have wires on both small terminals on diesel it would only have wires on one as the other is for (HOT START) on gas engines

Diesel. I could have sworn the wires came off the terminal closest to the engine when I removed it. Still can't get it to start. New batteries, new starter and solenoid. Keyswitch checked for continuity, starter button checked for continuity. I ordered the forward wiring harness last Saturday from the dealer. They said it will be here today. I won't get a chance to put it on until a week from Saturday.

Damn! I really need this thing to run!

If I needed it I would have jumped it from the power wire by now. Just be careful not to burn the threads on the short leads on the solenoid. Put some nuts on it first and jump to the nuts. Double check that it is out of gear, brake on !

there should be letters by the small terminals R and S the S is the start terminal if you jump from the BIG terminal to the S terminal it should crank... if you power the R it wont do anything..... if the solenoid is on top of the starter than the S terminal should be the closest to the block

GR, when you say it "won't start" does that mean you have the starter cranking and spinning the engine but it won't run -or- the starter won't crank? I noticed in your first post that you didn't mention the neutral safety switch on the side of the transmission, have you checked that?

The starter will not spin. No I have not checked the neutral safety switch. Quite stupid of me actually. It certainly acts exactly like it does when I try to crank it in gear.

What do I have to remove to get to the transmission?

I can't even figure out how to take the seat off!

Thank you for the tips Unclebeef, jtrichard and Scottyb... With y'alls help, I think I be able to get this puppy running shortly!

Still not running... reposted from new topic

Post by GRWeldon » Thu Jun 05, 2014 6:27 pm

Just reposting the latest post...It was a new topic that I thought I would put it here for those who have been following...

Guys,

I've been struggling now for months trying to get my 350B starter to work.

I've replaced a front wiring harness and the starter/solenoid. I've done a bunch of continuity and voltage checking using the tech manual and wiring diagram. I've found that I've got a bad diode in the alternator, but that won't keep the girl from starting, just from charging, eh?

I've bypassed the neutral safety switch, cleaned the ignition switch and push-button switch. I have battery voltage at the solenoid "S" terminal when the ignition switch is on and the push button is pressed, however, the starter won't engage.

I've manually tested the starter by connecting the large lug on top of the solenoid to the bottom connection to the starter and the starter spins, but the solenoid doesn't engage the starter drive. Keep in mind that this is a brand new starter and solenoid (well, four months old but hasn't cranked her over yet).

I'm at my wits end and I need to use my crawler.

Can somebody tell me what I need to do to check if the solenoid is bad because I think it is, even being brand new. I'm about to pull out what little hair I have left. Please help me if you can!

Thanks folks,
Glen
