Install a rear main seal on a early 1960's John Deere 1010

Post by 3kingsauto » Sun Feb 09, 2014 5:14 pm

Hello, has anyone ever installed a rear main crankshaft seal in a 1010 gas engine crawler? The repair manual I have says to pull the oil seal plate off the block to install the new seal but I pulled the old seal and have not removed the plate yet and it looks like I could just tap the new seal in without pulling the plate. Does anyone know if that will cause any issues? Also, does anyone know how far to tap the seal in? Do you tap it in until it bottoms out or until the outside of the seal if flush with the outside of the mounting plate?

Thanks

i believe it is flush (was your old one? ) i would just replace it the removal of the plate is for centering but that should be fine ..... if you are that far into it i would think about rod and main bearings :) :) :)

If your old seal was leaking, you may have a slight wear groove or blemish on the crank where it had been. If it won't affect anything else, I would tap it in a little farther beyond the original spot. gregjo1948
