450 canopy for 440??

Post by Timberwolf13 » Mon Mar 17, 2014 8:49 pm

Found a cheap canopy from a 450 crawler. Could it be modified to work on a 440ic or icd with loader? How much work would it take to fit well?

What do you mean canopy? Is it a factory ROPS? Pictures would help. gregjo1948

Hi,

The 450 is quite a bit larger in all dimensions than a 440. I would think a 450 ROPS would need a lot of modification to fit a 440.....

I drive by a 1010 all the time that looks to have a similar mod. It conjurs the image of my 5 year old daughter wearing my XL Carhart jacket around the house.

Hi,

A ROPS is designed to withstand the weight of the machine, plus the other forces involved during a rollover. It is meant to provide a safe space for the operator. A large part of that involves the mounting points.

The idea is that staying put inside the safe space is much better than trying to jump for it and then avoid the rolling machine you just jumped from.

Just sticking on something, even if that something is a ROPS from another machine would be better described as a TRAP. In this case you can't even try to jump for it. You just stay put while the cage breaks loose, then bends into a ball, while you wind up mangled worse than you would have been if the machine just rolled over you once and moved on.....

Food for thought.

Rops on a 440

Post by JWB Contracting » Tue Mar 18, 2014 6:24 pm

I think what most people want a ROPS for is protection from falling trees versus rollover protection. Most of us deere crawler operators pucker up long before we get in a potential roll over situation.

It would take some work to mount any canopy. Mounting to the top of the loader frame on the front and rear hoe hooks would give fairly sturdy mounting points. I haven't seen a 350 or 450 canopy mounted to a 440, but lots of home made ones good and bad.

Absolutely. I'd only put a canopy on because of the stuff that tends to come raining down when you poke trees in the woods. It's pretty damn hard to roll one of these things over, and besides, they aren't that heavy.

That's kinda what I was thinkin. If I put it on the loader, then there's some sturdy mount points already and since I just mainly use it on the landing and on already dozed roads, I don't really have to worry about too much rollover. Mostly falling debris and logs trying to roll back off the forks during truck loading.
