starter grinding

Post by crgenther » Sat Mar 22, 2014 2:17 pm

The starter on my 440 doesn't always engage and it makes an awful grinding noise.
I pulled it and the ends of the teeth on the starter are showing wear. fortunately there is little damage to the gear on the fly wheel.
The starter looks fine. Is there anything I can do or is a rebuild in order.

Thanks
Curt

Assuming it has been converted to 12 volt....
Go back to 6V.

It is a 6v system.

The other possibility is the starter ring gear is on the flywheel backwards.

It use to work fine. The grinding is a new development.
I cleaned it good and lubed the drive mechanism.
Grinding got worse.
It doesn't have a bendix, it seems that the rotation of the starter throws the drive gear out, and a light spring retracts it after starting.
Near as I can tell anyway.

What you are describing IS a bendix mechanism just not a solenoid activated positive shift bendix.

Does it finally start or just grind?

If I jog the starter switch on and off it will engage after two or three times, and then it will start.

Rebuild the starter with a new bendix.

I believe you are both right. I pulled a starter out of another 440, and it works great.
I would like to rebuild the starter, are all the necessary parts available?

The starter I replaced it with turns over slower, could it be a 12V?
It looks identical to the other.

No difference.
Most conversions are done with no change to the starter.
Weak starters often need one or more of the new brushes, bushings, bearings, and fields.

Parts are available from Deere or here locally at Ademas rebuilders.
Lavoy may have some as well.

I stock drives, but not bushings and brushes, or have rebuilt starters available.

What does the bendix look like. I don't see one in the parts breakdown?
