Hi,
Deere made over 2000 40C's as three rollers. The idea was to use the short tracks to gain additional grip over wheels to pull three bottom plows. At least that was the idea behind the MC, and that idea continued on with the 40C.
Of course, other folks had other ideas, and wanted to add other things to the machines, necessitating longer tracks.
The entire line from the MC to the 440IC was an exercise in evolution, and those evolutionary milestones never to seem to line up with the model numbering changes. Those model numbers being driven not by our small machines, but rather the large field tractors.....
The three roller crawlers are somewhat unloved these days. There isn't really anything they are good for that a five roller will not do better.

Three roller
According to an article in the Two Cylinder magazine John Deere intended
to introduce it's new and improved four roller 40c with the rest of the 40
line up.The Korean war delayed this rollout because of metal and tooling
shortages.Oddly the number of these machines is about the same as the
430c and Lindeman crawlers although they certainly aren't in as much
demand.Luck,JimAnderson
