newer 440ICD

Post by scampr » Fri May 02, 2014 5:04 pm

This should be a easy one. I just picked up a newer 440 ICD with the up and down throttle vs my old style. The PO had tried and tried to start it and asked all sorts of ?s on here. I got it for parts but it really isnt that bad so was going to try to start it. I am sure the problem is its turning over very slow. MY question is there isnt a shut down cable on it. Is the throttle also used to shut it down? I would think not... but before i dive to deep thought i should ask. Thanks...

You can adjust the throttle so it will kill it, but not the correct way, there should be a shutoff cable.
Make sure you have fuel coming out of the return line when cranking. Check the line from filter to pump, I had one collapse internally and wouldn't let enough fuel through.

Hi,

Oh, I hate it when that happens! Works when you stick the end of the hose into the coffee can. Does not work under working pressure!

Sorry i didnt get back.. I got it running after changing the starter and got the shut off all figured out... but i mainly wanted to see how i would stand if i used it for parts. ALL the clutches are stuck but it does move in all gears and the reverser works in forward but slips in reveres. MY main goal was to swap trans and add the reverser with the 440 i dozer I have now. Other than the tracks this really isnt that bad... so now torn.. do i keep both? lol
sooooo do i need a dozer and a loader too..???? :)

I had a 440ICD a couple years back and I don't remember a shut down cable on it. I think I just closed the throttle. I do have a cable on my 1010 but, it doesn't have the Detroit diesel. gregjo1948

With the amount of the shut offs that are lost, I wonder if there'd be any interest in buying them if I had them made?
I was finally able to find one for mine but it took about 2 years of searching so I could use it as a template.

Standard T handle choke type cable is all you need unless the corresponding components are missing on the engine.

Yea that T-handle is common and easy to find. There is a small piece that is up on the engine that the T-handle cable connects to. That small piece pushes against the throttle linkage.
That small piece is what gets lost usually I think. It'd be pretty simple to make.
