1010 coolant hose elbow fastener

Post by Steelburner » Mon May 05, 2014 6:41 pm

Hello everyone!

I'm the new owner of a late model 1010 gasoline crawler loader that used to belong to my Father. It had a hard life as an instrument of demolition before my family bought it. An owner prior to me must have had a love affair with it, because other than some dents here and there, there is little wear that I can tell. After sitting neglected for about a decade, it now is my turn to have it. My Dad is not mechanically inclined and I am in the process of righting many wrongs committed by him, such as dirty lubricants, lack of lubricants, and general tune up stuff. Luckily, the machine was not used much during this period of its life and the damage is not bad at all. One thing that is driving me nuts is the bolt that holds the metal coolant elbow is broke off and, try as I may, I cannot get the stub out of the block. I'm starting to think it is not threaded but a dowel of some type. The parts catalog is no help at all. Is anyone familiar with this fastener and can help me get it out? I have tried welding a nut to it with no luck whatsoever. I have even tried using a slide hammer in case it was a dowel pin. I am out of ideas. Thank you.

That is a dowel pin.

Agreed, if I remember right the 2010's have that also.

Thank you very much! I was getting frustrated and had to give up trying to weld a nut on it last night. I suspected a dowel pin because the elbow itself has mounting holes in it, one of which is not a thru hole. What does the other hole bolt to (it is a thru hole)? Is there any spacers behind the elbow? It seems to be misaligned with the water pump outlet. Any tricks to getting the dowel pin out? I know about drilling a hole thru it and using grease to hydraulically push it out, but am scratching my head trying to figure out what to weld to the dowel to pull it out. Thanks again for the help.

Well, here is what I found out. I finally got the dowel pin out, but I had to drill it out. Heat and welding a nut didn't work. I even tried welding a threaded stud to it and rigged up a makeshift puller. I ended up drilling the dowel out. It was soft, possibly from all the welding. At first I drilled a 1/8" hole and tried to drive out the dowel with a punch and grease. No luck. After drilling the dowel out, I found out that this dowel is only attached to the front plate, then there is a gap of about 1/4" or so and then the cast iron block. The dowel does not go into the block as I assumed. The front plate of the block is made from 3/16" plate. I stuck a hook rule into the dowel hole and found that it is 3/8" thick at this location. My question is, is there a washer welded to reinforce the dowel pin or is the dowel a headed type that is welded in place? The reason I ask is I would like to know if a washer or stud head is going to fall into the oil pan. Also, if it is a welded reinforcement at the stud hole, there is enough meat to install a helicoil for a bolt to hold the coolant elbow. Does any of this jog someones memory who has had one of these engines apart? I suspect it is a welded boss like the one that supports the generator on the plate that the water pump is mounted to, but I would really like confirmation from someone who knows for sure. Thanks!
