440 ICD Blacck smoke

Post by Captainjoe » Fri May 09, 2014 3:27 pm

Starting to get a lot of black smoke when running my crawler.Just noticed the today. So i quit early.

Doesn't seem to be burning any oil?

Going to switch from Rotella 30 weight to Rotella 40 weight?

Or would it be better to use chevron delo 100 40W

started smoking more when I put in a diesel fuel additive as I double dosed it.

Its definitely black...
Injectors? maybe glow plugs?

No noticable drop in power just a lot of smoke... And she didn't hardly smoke at all before, under full power.

Book says 30 weight but your the second person that said to go with 40 weight...

Thanks, Joe

Either 30 or 40 wt, I would lean towards 40 wt, but ONLY Delo 100 or equivalent, and there are not a lot of equivalents out there.

You will have to go to Chevron oil jobber, not real likely to find it anywhere else. I finally found it at a large distributor about 40 miles from me.

It is tough to find.
Sounds like the fuel additive is breaking down some carbon buildup and has possibly clogged the injectors somewhat causing a poor fuel spray, thus making it not fully burn the fuel in the chamber.

Pretty easy to replace on a Detroit, difficult to clean or test unless you have injection testing equipment. Rebuilts are in the $100 range exchange from Detroit.
