Steering clutch

Post by 1010c » Wed May 28, 2014 9:27 pm

In my 1010c dozer the right clutch works well most of the time but some times it makes a bad grinding sound when i pull the lever and it boggs the engine right down and track looses power abruptly but if i keep travelling straight then try it again it works well any ideas?

Something is wrong, I would quit using the machine til I figure out what the problem is. Might be as simple as brake band worn out, or could be a bad bearing. Either way, it will cost more to repair if additional damage is done by continuing to run it.

Sounds like the pinion bearing(s) are bad. Had that happen before. You pull back and you hear a grinding noise. (Grinding noise was the clutch disk wearing on the final drive casing. Since there was no bearing left, the steering clutch pack/ pinions shaft could travel in and out as it wanted to.

And it works once in a while too since sometimes you get the pinion shaft centered correctly and a piece of the broken bearing wedged just right in the race, and it works for 10 seconds..

When you tear the final apart, if there is a lot of fine grey powder, then your clutch pack was wearing on the final drive housing, and bearings are probably toast.

Good luck.

Steering clutch

I hope it is not that i would say it works 60% of the time. How much work is it to take that apart and to take the steering clutxhes apart. Also Is there any special tools needed?

Hi,

It is quite a bit of work. Firstly, you have to split the track and drop it. Then you have to hoist the entire final drive assy off. Neither of which is light.

After that, it is not so bad. You do need the clutch pack setting tool at the very least.

While you are in there, replace everything. No skimping due to cost. Trust me on that one....

Also, might as well plan on doing the other side as well. Get it all out of the way at one time. Trust me on this as well. If you don't do both sides, it won't be long before you wish you had....

So for sure it was not a smart thing for the PO to dump diesel down. So what does everyone else do to free up the clutches ?

A little TCE (trichloroethylene) will make the diesel go away.

Hi,

Yes, I have done both sides in one day. As long as everything behaves as it should. One stuck item, though.....
