MC final drives

Post by MountainHighMC » Fri Jun 27, 2014 2:29 pm

Hey guy's great site, I'm just getting into my first crawler here and was wondering if the final drive can be removed from a 49' MC as an assembly?
I've got little experience with iron this old and have no service literature whatsoever, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, it has to be removed as an assembly for the most part. Split the tracks and take off the sprocket first.

Good info Ralph! First time I did a final, took a while to figure out why it wouldn't come free. gregjo1948

Hey guy's is there anywhere on the net I can find a parts breakdown or a schematic of these finals?
Is it a tapered keystock that couples the hub to the drive axle?
I've got a bit of a mess on my hands here, may need some pieces that are in better shape than mine...

Hubs and axles are splined. Parts breakdown is on Deere's parts website, service manual is purchase only.

So it appears that I have an incorrect drive hub on my left side.
There were half a dozen pieces of keystock taking up the space where the hub is supposed to be tapered to match the axle.
The hub on the right side seems to be good and tight, the left has beat the axle all to heck.

That is not uncommon on MC's and 3 roller 40's, they are prone to hub and axle damage.

If schematics help go to jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com

The MC tractor parts book is PDF so you may have to eat lunch while it downloads.

Hi,

Fortunately, you only need one service manual, for the M.

I need four to cover my 420 phase 3. The M, 40, 420 and 430 manuals. They do not cover, in manuals for later models, that which is unchanged from earlier ones. in all fairness to Deere, they figured only service shops would need these books, and a service shop would not want to take up more bench binder space than they had to. Hence they do not repeat themselves.

And, because mine is a phase 3, containing changes which were about to be the model 430, I need that manual as well. My 420 manual only covers phases 1 and 2. It was easier to just get a 430 manual than to hunt down the correct revision for a phase 3.....
