TWO DIFFERENT GEAR RATIOS?

Post by RacinJason » Mon Sep 29, 2014 7:59 pm

I really have a strange problem. It seems I have two different ratios in my final drives. I'll continue this thread soon, sorry.

Very possible. I will bet on one side you have 14 and 63, other side, 14 and 55. Edit, should have said 16 and 63.

Tooth count

Post by JWB Contracting » Mon Sep 29, 2014 10:49 pm

I though there was only 1 tooth difference?

Tooth Count

Post by RacinJason » Tue Sep 30, 2014 8:38 am

Unfortunately, I left my Parts Manuals in Maine, so I don't have them handy. According to the 420 Manual, they list 2 Final Drive Gearsets, for the crawler, which have nearly identical Gear Ratios. The P/N for one is the same as that which is listed in the 40C Part Manual, which has only 1 set mentioned. In the 420 Manual, it lists the tooth count for the wheeled tractors also, some of which have the same P/N (ratio) as the Crawler and some are different. When I get back to ME in a couple weeks, I will make a list of the different P/N and Tooth Count applications.
As I don't know where this Dozer came from, originally, I don't know who installed the mismatched Gearset. If anyone on this Forum knows anything about this JD 420C, I hope they would contact me here or call my Cellphone 413 348 6013. It has the 62 Dozer and had a JD 350 Track on the Left Side. Both Tracks were short-tracked, w/one side having one link less than the other. LOL That's what I thought caused it to steer to the right. I now have a nice set of 14" Snow Tracks, w/the proper 35 Links on both sides, thanks to Terry Briggs. Sorry for the long post, hopefully I can get some more ideas before I tear into it. Thanks for the previous input. Jace

Pull the pinion shaft covers, that is the easiest way to count teeth.

Thanks, Lavoy. I will be doing that. Unfortunately, I'll have to pull both sides, but not till after snow season. One side needs bearing adjustment, anyway. We had quite a bit of snow in ME last year and I'll need it to push back the snowbanks in my driveway to make room for more snow. The mismatched ratios are not much bother in that situation and I don't want a project before snow flies.
