Stripped Mounting

Post by Trich » Sun Dec 23, 2007 5:30 pm

On my 1956 420 there is a 3/4" bolt that secures the floor plate to the side of the fly wheel housing with a bushing. The threads in the fly wheel housing have become worn to the point they will not hold a new bolt. I am thinking I will need to drill the hole out and tap it up to 7/8. Is this the right way to go?

This sounds like it may be a good candidate for a HeliCoil. It comes with the proper drill to drill the hole, then you thread in the coil. It makes a great rethread back to your original size.
They are available at most of the chain auto parts stores, along with TSC and others.

I just got a 3/4" HeliCoil kit, it was $80. OUCH! That is probably not the last place you will ever need a 3/4" thread repaired on that machine though.
