That is an M1 Garand, not an M1A , you may have already known that. Wood looks nice, what manufacturer is it?

Nice looking M1. Not trying to offend, But the M1 Garand was just M1. The M1A is the commercial version of the M14, built by Springfield armory. Used in a lot of NRA matches these days. They also have some super Garand matches at Camp Perry every summer. Was issued the Garand originally, then the M14, then an AR, in my time in service. Really liked the M1, and have one also. Hope You keep your Dads', and pass it down. Pat

Says on rifle springfield armory, look close at the photo with the serial number, it states that on the gun itself... havent pulled it out of the house in years, need to get it cleaned and oiled....I personally never shot it, but my brother did, put the stock against a tree ,and pulled the trigger, BIG BANG, also found my dads old street sweeper shot gun, looks like a tommy gun, Now that I shot, but someone (ME) put buck shot in it, about blew my wrist off..LOL.......enjoy......Mark Cc ..and thanks for clearing up the difference between the M1A and the garand....

I have always used M1 Garand as to differentiate between the M1 Garand, and the M1 carbine. May not be technically correct, but everyone knows what you are talking about then.

Watch out Lavoy. Am dealing on an M14. Will take ATF about 5 months to clear the paperwork, so if it goes through, come on down and shoot it. (should be a better investment than the stock market! Quit making them in 86) Pat

What manufacturer? Do you mean origianl military?
Ran into a neighbor from back home last night at a gun store, and he suggested the Fulton Armory version. I have seen their ads, but that is about it. The store we were in had a commorative Springfield Armory Camp Perry M1A, and 1911 in a matched numbered set, 160 of 500.. For the low, low price of $3800 I could have owned them, but had to pass, not sure they would have taken a crawler in on trade.

Why don't you bring it and a case of ammo up this summer, we'll see how it works. Last time I shot one, me and 6 other guys went out and shot down an old silo at a guys farm, that was fun.

Lavoy, I'd almost let you trade my crawler for an M14 so long as I could come over and shoot it every once in a while.

Maybe it's a 1010C thing.

P.S. The Fulton Armory stuff is nice. If I end up getting the M1 I'm working on from CMP, I'll probably send it to them to rebuild it.

Springfield Armory. All GI parts. Converted by PBM in the 80's. Hope the paperwork is done by summer!! Shooting the silo down brings back memories. Last time I fired an M14, we carved a doorway out of a cement block wall. Pat

How come so much paperwork on that one? If it is a Springfield, should be no more paperwork than a new M1A I would think.

My brother just got a CMP Garand a few months ago, very nice. Unless you wanted to do a full military numbers matching restoration, I wouldn't do a thing to it. I would guess it is an arsenal refinish at some time, and has virtually new wood on it by the looks of it.

I was going to get a look at what I got before I committed to anything else. Anything you get from CMP that is field grade or better should be completely safe but they might be a little sloppy for anything but casual shooting. I've got a bolt action tactical rifle now that I can reach out to 700 yards but I've always wanted an M1. I'll let you know when I get it.

Lavoy: It is selective fire (automatic) Requires background check, registration, transfer tax, etc., etc. Bill, I've gotten several DCM M-1 Garands, service grade, and they were in great shape as received. Pat

Thanks Pat. I was planning on going the extra $100 for service grade over field grade. I think the only thing that bugged me was the note on the CMP site about mismatched wood but it seems like a tight rifle with no other issues other than mixed beech and walnut pieces was still a great deal and a nice rifle to own.
