Oil in reverser gettiing hot

Post by eclark492 » Thu May 22, 2008 9:22 am

For Digitup or Lavoy,
I have a 1965 350 and the reverser oil seems to be getting too warm. If I put my hand on the stick after I run it awhile it"s almost too hot to touch. Otherwise it seems to work fine. Is it normal for it to run that hot.

This is almost always a sign of the Clutch plates sliping If your oil pressure is up them the clutch is wore out watch it close but it is the best news I can give you .Digitup.

Digitup.
Not necessarily true.

They all get so hot you can hardly touch them - once used hard for awhile. Never operated one that didn't, even when brand new.

Since we're dicussing imprecise terms here - "hot to touch" alone doesn't mean much of anything. Now, if it heats up unsually fast - or gets so hot it's going to reach the flash-point of the oil inside - then there's bad trouble.

A 350 reverser will get just as hot as the engine after awhile - there's nothing to prevent that. Try putting your hand on the engine after it's hot - and it's going to hurt too.

Flash point of the HyGuard oil (or equivalent) is around 458 degrees F. At 200 degrees F you won't be able to hold your hand on the reverser - yet at that temp there is no danger.

Lowest rated equivlanet to HyGuard still has a flash-point of 381 degrees F which is pretty hot.

Hi,

Yeah, hot to the touch means over 120 deg F, which really does not say much, does it? Time to get one of those cheap infrared electronic thermometers, I think, and come up with an actual temperature.

When we were selling 350Cs new - our dealership had a 10 acre wood/dirt lot out back. Every crawler, backhoe and skidder we sold got run for a few hours pushing or moving dirt before it left. That includes new 350Cs and also any older machines we'd just repaired. I never ran a 350 that you could hold your hand on the reverser case after that workout.

I have had the reverser case on a two cylinder crawler at over that temp after a long run on the dyno. In the world of modern lubricants, that is a low temp.
