stuck steering clutches
i was told that u could take coke and dump it onthe clutches to free them up . this friend has a frind thatworks int a gravel pit and he said they wold do it every sping when they went to use it. the other question would be is what about mereatic acid that will eat rust ? i had the clutches apart before and there was rust build up on them. i was afaid of scaping it off cause i thought it might ruin them so they were apart . the only reason is because i had to put a input shaft in it. at least it goes forward and backwards now.
im 23 and i have a 1940 jd h tractor ,a jd 420 dozer, a case vac 1947,a farmall a 193?, a farmall regualer 192? , a 1951 merc ,a1956 dodge 1 ton ,and a stover 1 lunger a ct2
Hmm , coke or muriatic acid in the steering clutch housing ? Neither of them sounds like a good option . The only real option would be to take the final drives off and clean the steels and the fibers to remove the rust , check the thickness of both plates then go from there . As long as the plates are in spec and they are not oil soaked you should be able to get your clutch adjusted . I know what a pain it can be to get down to the steering clutches but in the long run it would be the best solution to the problem . 3M Industrial scrub pads work well for removing rust from the fiber disks , after scraping them to get the majority of the rust off . If the steels are good and you can afford them replace the fiber disks with new ones . Buy or make gaskets (M1487T)for the inspection covers (M907T) and seal them with a sealant to keep the water out . Both the covers and the gaskets are available still .
When I got mine there were no gaskets on the covers or drain plugs in the bottom of the steering clutch housings . As there are creeks that will be crossed around here that has to be fixed
Also check to be sure your throwout bearing is adjusted properly , and one other thing is to gently push against an immovable object while working the steering clutches between engaged and disengaged , Dan

Keep in mind, that often times when they are stuck, the fiber discs are so swelled up that they have the fingers of the pressure plate crushed all the way down. Adding more moisture will not fix this problem.
As far as the Coke fix, I have heard of it often used, but to free rusted together metal items. Whether it is any better than plain old water, or acid I don't know, I have always used just water.

The discs will swell up from the moisture? If they r what could u do ? That input shaft that Ibaught from Lavoy works good just whish i didnt rush to put it to gether . I took the presure plates off and seprated all the discs. I all so took a carbon fiber disc to the metal and the fiber but the stuff was really stuck to the fiber. Ive been pushing up against a stump trying to work them a couple of times but it just digs to holes.
