steering clutch drive shaft

Post by Eric.MacLeod » Sat Dec 27, 2008 8:38 pm

i just took the left side final apart because the clutches are frozen with rust, when i pulled it apart i found that the throwout bearing had worn a groove around the clutch drive shaft, it has worn into a snap ring and tapered what lookes to be part of the hub, will this be ok? can i just add a new throwout bearing and tube? the tube looks like what caused the wearing on the shaft because the tube is flared out and worn badly. thank you.. Eric

I broke one on my MC a number years ago, so it must be under some stress, If i remember right it is about and inch in diameter. It may last a long time or fail in a week. anybodies guess on how long it may last. at the least i would blend out the score line to relieve the stress. it will be weaker but msy last for a while.

Have Fun!!

I would use the spare shaft, maybe clean up the damaged splines with a file. it should slide out fairly easy. maybe some lapping compound, just clean it up real good after using lapping compound.

The fun in this is figuring out a solution to the problem.
