Help, I'm trying to remove the gears from my transmission case to do some cast iron repairs, I have to do this so I can preheat the casing to do the repairs. I can see the the power shaft needs to be removed so you can remove the differential, allowing all other gears to be removed. Is the shaft pressed on, and what is the best way to remove it? It is the 5-speed trans.

Remove the differential first by removing the final drive housings and the quills on each side of the transmission. Remove the transmission rear cover and take out the differential. I don't remember if it is the four or five speed, but one may take a little coaxing.
To remove the power shaft (output shaft), take off the bearing cover at the front of the transmission. Remove the locknut and tap the shaft rearward. Collect the shims before they fall into the case.

The output shaft has the lock nut, not the PTO shaft. The PTO shaft also has a bearing cover on the front of the transmission. Remove it and then tap the PTO shaft forward just a little to free the bearing. Then you can remove the front bearing plate from the input shaft and also work this shaft forward a little. Then you can remove the input shaft out the top of the case.

I,m just must not be seeing things right, but the input shaft has the pinion on it and appears to have to be removed through the back of the case where the diferential is, unless I knock the bearing cup foward and out into the case then it would come out. Is that what needs to be done? So the power shaft (PTO shaft) would do the same to be removed I knock the shaft forward removing the bearing cup, thus removing the shaft and gears.

I did what you said and tapped the PTO shaft foward which then allowed me to remove the input shaft, which allowed room for the PTO shaft to be removed, then the differential then the output shaft.
I'd like to meet the engineer who figured out how to get all that in there like that.

It always looked to me like the engineers built the transmission first and then bolted everything else to it to make a crawler. At least it feels that way when you have to get to the transmission to work on it.
