Differential Seal

Post by CAR » Sat Feb 14, 2009 6:05 pm

I ordered new seals from a local shop. I removed from my quil part number AM1717T, They crossed referenced this and sent me a Timken
472924. The seal is the right diameter O.D and I.D, but is much thinner and does not have the metal jacket on the inside that the old seal has. Can anyone tell me if I have the right seal? Thanks

The original seals are almost impossible to find, it has taken me years to find a source, I now keep several on hand. That being said, the replacement seal you received will work fine, but is not probably quite as strong, and you have to be a lot more careful when reinstalling the quill.

Thanks Lavoy,
Thats funny that they are so hard to come by. I say that because the seals for the finals are exactly like the old ones.

I have found other seals that the same thing has happened. But, many years ago, I put new bearings and seals in a little disc I bought. The hubs had actual rawhide seals in them, and when I ordered the new seals from Deere, they were rawhide as well, really shocked me.

You can get any type of oil seal you want. It's just not going to happen by using generic cross-reference numbers. That is because they do not match seals exactly by all attributes - only by shaft size and lip-type. This has been done to cut down warehouse inventories and sell you a general "fits all" seal. You can get seals designed just like the originals or better. You just look through a compete seal catalog and pick the seal by all the attributes you want.

Timken would not be my first choice as they are selling National Brand seals. Different companies have different options available. Garlock was a very popular one back in the 40s-50s-60s for tractors. Chicago Rawhide another, plus many more. Those metal-backed seals are not hard to get.

Thanks for that information, unfortunatly I have already installed the seals, quill and steering clutch housing. Since this is not an everyday use tractor I should be fine. I'll just remember to order seals with all the attributes to get what I want. I did notice the spec. sheet was from Timken, so it looks like they still make that seal.
