Rewiring the 420... need original wire gauges and colors

Post by Ray III » Sat Apr 18, 2009 4:45 pm

The wires on my 420 are failing due to age. I had to run a temporary ignition wire when the engine died out of the blue. The wires have also been painted over and cut and whatnot so I want to pull everything out and replace with all new wire since the electrical system is fairly simple.

Does anyone know what gauge wire to use for each wire? I know with 6 volt it has to be bigger than I'm used to.

I found a wiring diagram for an MC showing colors. Is it pretty much the same for a 420 other than the regulator? Anyone have a 420 specific wire diagram?

How were the wires routed to the rear light?

Lavoy - what do you have for replacement switches? JD parts or aftermarket?

I have new wiring harnesses, correct colors, complete with rear harness, and comes with wiring instructions.
I have aftermarket switches on hand, Deere got too spendy I think, but I can still get them if you prefer.

Interesting... how much is it for the harnesses and switch?

I already got new battery cables from you last year, just put them on. The crap that was on it was half the size. It cranks so much faster now. Already have an instrument panel lamp too that I haven't put on yet.

Sounds like a plan as soon as I get ahold of some more money.
