Check all the linkages for wear or slop, check the 5 small spring that are in there, if they are rusted, replace them. Clean as much of the rust and crud out of the housing as you can. Anti-seize everything that needs it before reassembly.

rust crud & dirt

Post by Randy Richards » Tue Jun 16, 2009 5:21 pm

Boy I wonder how all the junk gets inside the housing? It wasn't packed but there was quite a bid of it in there. I cleaned up the brake drum and associated parts drive shaft etc. AND I was surprised to find the flandge and the steering hub had viritually no play in them. Should I tear it down any further or just replace the steels and the fiber disk, pressure plate and the throw out beariing, brake band too? I don't want to do this again anytime soon to the same side.. SHOULD there be a drain hole in the housing at the bottom? The back of the pressure plate had some minor rubbing on it, anything to worry about or is this the fibers disk wear? thank all of you for yor HELP!!!

Check the pinion shaft for play, and if there is any oil seepage, replace the pinion shaft seal.
Should be no wear on the pressure plate, make sure the spring is inside the rear end that puts outward pressure on the drive shafts.
Yes, there should be a 3/4" NPT plug in the bottom of the clutch housing.

final stripped and a couple of questions

Post by Randy Richards » Thu Jul 02, 2009 12:12 pm

well I have the left final stripped and cleaned. All I need is the parts that Lavoy is shipping, new pressure plate, fiber disks, steels, throw out bearing, brake band, and also the steering shaft , bushing , and afew other parts. I looked to see if the spring was still in the spline hole and there was nothing there, it must have been left out when someone else rebuilt it. What does this spring do? I did lay out all the parts when I disasembled the final, not that many I didn't think. But the steering lever shaft I have left together to make sue I don't get something in backwards. Are ther any secrets to stripping the steering shaft? The bolts are really rusted up pretty bad though. should I use thread locker on these bolts just to make them stay put?

chain in final

Post by Eric.MacLeod » Thu Jul 02, 2009 6:27 pm

randy, when i got my 420 it would not steer so i took a piece of 3/8 chain and tied it to a tree and the dozer trying to free the clutches up, this didnt work, i had the inspection covers off to look inside, i put the chain on the fender and pulled away from the tree, thats when the chain fell into that tiny square hole, about 4 feet of it was wrapped around the shaft, it took the brake rod, throwout adjuster, and pressure plate out, it took half an hour to get it out.. so i can see how a cross chain could get in there...Eric

Well everything takes time, the parts are here and the whole shabang is ready to go back together. Now just to find the time during the summer months. Lavoy has been great to work with and he answers the dumb questions just as fast as the normal stuff. Thanks Now on to finishing the job we started a few short months ago.

final ready

Post by Randy Richards » Mon Aug 24, 2009 3:45 pm

Parts are parts and the final is ready to back in the ole girl. I hope it goes back in as easy as it came out, but I have found that it's more a mental game than anything else. I'm not use to working on some thing this big. thanks, I've gotta get back to work.

ready to go finally!!!!

Post by Randy Richards » Fri Nov 12, 2010 6:11 pm

After reading and writting and trying everything I can say that with the help from all the guys the old girl is ready for a test run after I come back from vacation... I need it after this ordeal! But I am here to tell all the first timers if I can do a steering rebuild , you can too!!!!!! Just take small steps and lay all the parts on a sheet of plywood and mark each. It took me over a year from start to finish. Just be patient, and stop when things seem to be going wrong and come back at another time!!!! GOOD LUCK and THANKS!!
