trans removal on a 1010

Post by Joe Iannitto » Sun Dec 27, 2009 9:54 am

I'm finally getting around to replacing the transmission on my 1010. So far I have over come many obsticles that the former owner placed in my way ,such as welded in master pins. I'm looking for advice from people who have done this before. I have the manual but words of wisdom go beyond the book. I have the tractor blocked up about 4 inches since I removed the treads. My concern is the rear draw bar. It looks like it is attached to the rear housings. I was thinking of placing jacks under the draw bar such that I will suppot it when removing the drives and then I can lower it so that I can slide the tranny out.
besides the welded in master link pins . The ttractor is missing the left brake rod, and the old tranny was filled with sludge and gear oil, it looked like black pudding rolling out.
Maybe I should post pics of this project

I have the greatest respect for all you who work on these machines. I am posting a link to the pictures I have taken so far in this project. I have encountered just about ever problem discussed in this forum. The previous owner must have been a cobbler. Yesterday I got to removing the left final drive. I came off leaving the clutch inside the brake housing. Meaning the retaining clip is either missing or somewhere inside the final drive. The left brake housing is packed with rust such that the throwout bearing is frozen , the bearing carrier shows it was being jamed against the pressure plate. The clutch fork right now is frozen in the brake housing. http://s902.photobucket.com/albums/ac22 ... 20project/

Joe, I had the same problem when I took the right side final drive housing off my 420. The clutch assembly stayed in the clutch housing, but my final drive was broken.
We do have an OFF TOPICS section, if you would care to post pictures of some of your military trucks.
