doing a major overhall of our 420 c ( rebuilting engine) and we where wondering about the clutch, it seems decent, although the pilot bearing was pretty will shot, this is a ceramic clutch. When I press down on the springs with my thump, two depress down easyer then the third one. What should the thickens of the clutch plate be, cannot get anying info. on specs. of a new clutch, tried supplier too no aval. for specs on new clutch. We believe that we replace clutch about 20 yrs ago, when we where doing repairs, since tach does not work , have no idea on hrs since then. Thanks for anying info. Randy

If you can depress the levers with your thumb, the springs are weak, and most likely you will be splitting the crawler again to replace the pressure plate. Engine clutches are not expensive, not really worth the chance of a do over.

how do you find out if the clutch plate itself is still good, I would like to find the specs on a new clutch plate and compare it to the old clutch plate. when I look at the rivets on the clutch face there seems to be lots of face left on the plate itself. I would get the clutch plate resurface when it is out, and put new pressure plate for sure, just not sure if money is well spent on new clutch plate when old one seems too have life yet.

Not sure what you mean by having the clutch plate resurfaced, do you mean the flywheel?

I would say if it has a ceramic clutch disk--it will need the flywheel resurfaced and a new presure plate-- my thoughts are a ceramic clutch causes more trouble than good have fun Randy

I am just trying too figure if I should replace the clutch disc or go with the old one which seems in good shape, I can not find out how much ware is on the disc itself, I am just going by the dept too the rivets that hold the ceramic discs on. , there seems too be some room for ware before it gets into the rivets. I plan on doing the flywheel too. It is a buggar that the suppliers will not tell you the thickests of a new disc, so I can compare too my old clutch disc!

If you have a lot of room to the rivets, you are probably fine. I would have the flywheel ground, and put in a new pressure plate. Be sure to set the pressure plate fingers with the JD7 gauge once the pressure plate is bolted on, and you should be good as new.
