350 drive question

I have a 350 loader. The right side brake band needs to be replaced so i have been making alot of left turns LOL for steering. i have now noticed that the right side doesnt drive the way it did, like the cluthes a slipping or worn out.
Is there an adjustment for this? will the procedure for adjusting the brake band help?

If the brake and the clutch are both slipping, it sounds like there could be oil leaking into the clutch housing. Have you looked in the clutch housing (and/or removed the drain plugs recently)?

Thanks Ken, i was wondering if the adjust effected the clutch or just the linkage of when the clutch disengaged . I will try the adjustment.

I was pulling trees out to cut up last week and i am amazed at how much power this machine has.

I kinda have the same promblem.. My 350 was steering fine then would only steer to the left. and I a little to the right,, But now it won't steer at all ,it will move FWD and REV but "ONLY"on flat ground. I pulled the covers off the steering clutches. all in all it looks good in there.It was drity but no oil I thought their might be some oil in the case so I droped the belley pan and pulled the plugs out and it was dry. I have a friend that's coming over this week to show me how to adjust the clutch and steering brake. he also said he might have to adjust the HYD pump. Does this sound right you guys here?? Could you use brake cleaner to clean the cluch and steering brakes?

Ken, I would like to thank you for your reply. My friend was a JD mechanic for 25 years and has all the books for the machine. Now he works on his own.
I took the belly pan down one so I could drain the transmission which in turn I had to drop the draw bar that was in the way of the tranny plug. ( someone had welded in place and I couldn't slide it back out of the way) But I found the plugs for the steering case were just out of reach for me to get to. Two bolts and pan droped enough for me to get the plugs out,plus the pan was full of dirt.. It doesn't have much juice going up hill Maybe that's why he might have to adjust the HYD pump.
This is my first crawler and I'm still learning..and it's alot to learn.. I'm useing it on a piece of land I have for logging and clearing. It has a lot more power than the old CJ-7.
What do you think about cleaning the clutches and brakes with brake clener?

If they are not oily, no need to clean. If they are oily, they can not be cleaned. You aren't out anything to spray brake cleaner in there, just won't do any good, or at least long term good either.

Lavoy. I hope their just out of adjustment. I have a operators manual which shows to adjust the cluches and brake. But after opening the covers It looks like it wroth having my friend go over it with me.

Check and made sure everything is moving freely, nothing hanging up or rusted.

lavoy funny about the brake cleance,on my 350 the right side steering clutch brake cover was gone and the hyd oil over filed went inside there. I took 6 cans of brake fluid spayed all around in there. I did pull the drain plug first. It fixed the steering. I need to get the track pin welded befor i can say long the steering will last.

The Steering Clutch-Brake adjustment (if the 350 is built the same as my 450B) involves two linkages, and a stop screw between two actuators. The Brake adjuster functions like any car drum/shoe adjuster in that it accounts for break wear and affects when the brake picks up and how hard it pulls within the travel of the brake linkages and steering levers.

The clutch adjustment determines how soon the clutch disengages, which must be before the brake seriously takes hold. This clutch adjustment will have no affect on how much the clutch pressure plate holds the clutch engaged during driving. That is accomplished by adjusting the three bolts on the clutch's pressure plate using the adjustment gauge on the clutch/brake drum while it is removed, as referred to on other posts on this site (and in the manual). I can't imagine how one would adjust the clutch's holding pressure while it is installed in the machine.

When recently adjusting mine according to the manual, it appears that the brake linkage will be seen to be moving before the clutch is fully disengaged. I have not finished the rebuild to test the operation.

Lest one should just start turning bolts, the adjustment goes something like this:

Loosen the stop screw inside the steering clutch/brake housing.
Remove the steering lever slack and adjust free travel to spec using the rod ends on the lever's external linkage.
Adjust the clutch linkage bolt.
Adjust the brake band bolt tight then back off 1 1/4 turns.
Snug up the stop screw.

This is not meant to be a precise description. You really should use the manual's specific instructions for this. Perhaps someone could copy the adjustment instructions for 350's into the FAQ.
