440 2-53 motor rebuild?
440 2-53 motor rebuild?
my dozer uses about a quart of oil a day, i don't have any large leaks maybe a seep or two. the dozer is hard to start have to use either everytime. cannot push anything except in first gear, will not back up a hill in reverse lack of power? So my question is do i need to rebuild, check injector timing ?? up for any ideas or suggestions.

dear 440dozer, since you have run into a deadend on your question, i'm reposting to get it going again,,, first off, check your injectors for good seals and proper adjustment/positon matters within a few thousanths, right guys?

Using oil says that the rings are likely broken and/or liners are worn and ridged.440dozer wrote:my dozer uses about a quart of oil a day, i don't have any large leaks maybe a seep or two. the dozer is hard to start have to use either everytime. cannot push anything except in first gear, will not back up a hill in reverse lack of power? Hard to start can be several issues, but chances are you have the original "S" type injectors and pistons (17-1 compression when fresh)
It needs the newer "N" type that makes it 21-1 compression, helps with starting.
Lack of power can be several things. Low compression, poor injectors, etc.
I would say that now is a pretty good time to do a rebuild, it will not get any better.

It is highly suggested to stick with 35 MM injectors. A factory fresh GM 2-53 as spec'ed by JD is pushing around 30 HP and about 100 Ft Lbs. The tranny and finals will break if you add HP.

Lavoy,
I agree that it seems suspicious, but I am thinking low compression coupled with injectors that may be shooting droplets instead a fine spray and possibly wrong timing, the power would be way down.
Also could have a bad fuel pump or plugged fuel filter and not getting the proper fuel flow.

I KNOW I'M GETTING HERE LATE BUT DETROITS DO NOT HAVE THAT MUCH FUEL PUMP PROBLEMS--THIS SOUNDS LIKE IT NEEDS A GOOD TUNE UP OR AIR RESTRICTION SOMEWHERE ALTHOUGH THAT WOULD CAUSE SMOKE. MAKE SURE YOUR FUEL LINES ARE CLEAR ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE RUBBER LINES(EVEN STEEL BRAIDED IN RUBBER) AND OF COURSE CHECK FUEL FILTERS. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE BY INSTALLING A GAUGE ON THE PRESSURE SIDE OF THE PUMP SOMEWHERE DOWNSTREAM AND IT SHOULD BE AROUND 60 WIDE OPEN - NOTE- IF IT FLUCUATES 5 LBS AT SPEED THAT IS NORMAL AS THE BYPASS IS WORKING IN THE PUMP.
