Early model John Deere 420C parts needed

Post by Dairyfarmer79 » Sun Nov 28, 2010 5:34 pm

Howdy,
I just bought a John Deere 420C with a loader and the fellow told me that the reverser went bad and he tried to repair it but there were parts he was not able to get. It still works but you have to keep the handle secured with a bungee cord to keep it from coming out of gear. I was looking to see if anyone out there has any ideas or suggestions, or possibly another reverser assembly for sale?

Thank's

Shut it down and take it apart before you break it so bad that none of the parts are useable. If it slips out of gear, something is wrong and needs to be fixed. One way or the other, all of the parts are available, take it apart, fix it right and you are done with it.

The reversers require some extra patience to adjust since the working areas are so small. Could it just be out of adjustment?
I would attempt to adjust it per the JD Service Manual. If it still is not knuckling in and staying, do as Lavoy suggest and do not use it until it is repaired.

The fellow I bought it from said that he had the reverser all apart and said there was 2 needle bearings and a thrust washer that he tried to order but told me they were not available so he made bushings to replace the bearings and I have no idea what he might of replaced the thrust washer with! I really appreciate the help and if anyone has anymore idea's I'd really like to hear them! I would deffinitely like to get this thing fixed right before it damages something else! Does anyone know what a good used reverser might cost if this one can't be fixed??

Thank's again!!

All the bearings are readily available, I stock most if not all of them. There is a thrust washer that is obsolete, but I don't believe he is talking about that one. My guess is he meant the phenolic washer, and I have a bearing replacement for that.
There is no reason to buy a complete reverser, just fix or replace the parts that are bad in yours.
