440icd Transmission-1st/5th cluster gear, bearings shot

Post by zahnje » Mon Jun 19, 2006 6:23 pm

Lavoy,
:(
After completing the rebuilding of both final drives, new engine clutch and alot of undercarriage work I was up and running. I had begun a small dig and fill project with no major problems. Only just gear a shift that would pop out of gear sometimes. This is just in need of poppet springs and balls in the shifter, correct? But , while driving the machine to my neighbors property to continue the work and traveling down hill there was some popping and gear clenching sounds...not good I'm sure. Upon inspection under the trans. shifter cover I saw that the 1st/5th cluster gear was loose. Real loose. Needle bearings shot? No teeth damaged though. My questions are, are the parts readily available to fix?, is it final drives off (again) differential off and transmission off while supporting the rest to repair this? or has this, inspite of all my time, effort, money, patience, perseverence and ambition become a parts machine. Also, if repairable what else would you do if it was your machine, "while you're in there"?
Help is appreciated!

Best Regards,
JimZ.

If the gears are in good shape your not talking to much for bearings they are availible check with Lavoy and see if he has them but you do have to tear the back end apart again but since you have just had it apart it will be easier. If you have everthing else in good shape it would be well worth fixing I know it get's aggervating but it will be worth it, Good Luck

Like Howard said, the bearigns are readily available, but it is a pain to put them in. It might take two guys once in a while, and some patience, but the transmission can be removed out the back of the crawler. About the only way to redo a trans is to remove it. I would put every bearing in the trans and rear end as long as you have it out.
The one bright spot in this however, is if you want to keep the crawler, is you will know you have a sound transmission.

8)

Thanks guys,

I will be in touch for parts if you have them and other questions as I "go back in". If it all works out, and "in" for that matter, all that will be left is the reverser and a paint job! But that's for another day.

Best Regards,

JimZ.
