emergrncy rad repair need help

Post by Scottyb » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:37 pm

I put a hole in my rad. only damaged one horizontal tube about bottom third down, near middle. I had a big enough root bend in my cover just enough to let the point go through one tube, cut it clean about half inch of tube, but little other damage to the area around it. I got the reverser pulled back in the nick of time before it really blew out the rad.
It is Friday night and we are in the middle of "lumberjack Weekend" where a dozen of my buddies are here with chainsaws, my old 610 bobcats and my crawler " with my new winch\arch " doing a weekend of tornado clean up.
We cant do much without the Deere and that winch.
I cant get to a rad shop, ( 2 hrs away and likely closed until after the weekend) but I have a soldering torch, lead solder, paste and/or JB weld. I need a quick fix here, the rad is on the bench and what would you suggest I do. ?

I was hoping that solder was the answer. I only have my plumbing solder, and I am good with copper, so I will attempt to patch it up using the stuff I have. I will try to rough it up gently with emery cloth, use the flux and see how it goes.
Thanks for the support.

the plumbing solder worked as good as could be hoped. I ran it all weekend without any leaking.
I did however manage to throw off a track trying to make a tight turn in a spot full of blown down trees. Once we got the branches cleaned up under the
crawler we had the track back on in 20 min. Set it a little tighter than before.
