The front blade hydraulics are done!! Kind of congested but they work!!

Everything works but but I have two problems.
A couple of hydraulic leaks on the just rebuilt cylinders. Time for a conference with the hydraulic shop.
One electrical problem to chase down. When connecting the battery, I get a good spark...with nothing turned on?? Any ideas where to start??

Finally got it on youtube....
This was the first drive. The hydraulics are soft as I was working the air out. I had to remove one cylinder today and have it re sealed by the hyd shop that had just rebuilt it. I haven't put it on yet.

I have all the small problems resolved. The hydraulic shop found the problem and fixed the leak. I chased electrical for 2 hours and finally found that the regulator had a short. A new regulator has fixed that. You might have also noted in the video that the right track is tight. These tracks have been sitting for several years (not original to this crawler) and I'm going to run it some to see how much is rust. Once it's been run some, I'll readjust them. I've also made some tracking adjustments. The clutch needs a little adjusting too. It needs to be worked!!
Question??? I special ordered the 6V positive ground regulator (must not have been too special I had it out of stock the next day) and it came with a resistor to put inline on the F terminal. I did and everything works, but why??? Why the resistor?? The regulator is an exact duplicate of the one I had (minus the short ).

A resistor limits the amount of electrical current that passes through the circuit.
Think of kinking a garden hose. The kink "resists" the flow of water same as a resistor limits voltage.
Do you need to reduce the voltage past the resistor location in the circuit? If yes, leave it in. If no, you can run without it.

Just to add to what 2006 said. You have to watch terminology here.
If the resistor is in line with F (F wire hooks to one end of resistor then other end of resistor hooks to "F" terminal on regulator (and that's the only connection on "F" terminal)) then it is like a series circuit and will change the Voltage, not the current.
If the F wire AND one end of the resistor are on "F" terminal of regulator and the other end of the resistor is attached to another terminal then it is like a parallel circuit. In this instance it would change the amount of current and the voltage would stay the same.
Sounds like you are adjusting the voltage. It could be that the regulator is a 12 volt regulator and your dropping the voltage down to 6V for the regulator to function properly.

It is in line. Drop from 12 to 6??? Nothing 12V in this system. The regulator has a sticker on it that says 6V positive ground. I'm still not sure what it is for and if I ever open the dash again, I might remove it to see what happens. It likely is a universal VR and was on there to cover various applications.
Look in the service and parts book. That would be my guide.

The regulator is OK. It's just the resistor kit with it that was different and had a list for older units that mine is not on. My gen is not on the list and is to be used without it. Appearance wise, it is exact with the one that was on it, same size and terminals.
I removed the resistor and it is working fine. No real change on the amp meter and it shows charging as needed.
Question... I have an extra generator and it is missing the small spring which pushes the brush finger down. I think it also holds the finger on at the same time. I will want to clean it up and check it out for future use should I need it. I have 3, all the same, and this one would be the spare.
