JD 450c steering clutch problem
JD 450c steering clutch problem
hello I am new to the site, but have been reading post for a while. I have a 1979 JD450C that has a steering clutch problem. it fills the steering clutch housing up with fluid. I put new clutch pressure manifold rings on it and it did the same thing. It is leaking between the clutch pressure manifold ring and the clutch piston housing. I also put new sealing rings with the clutch pressure manifold rings any thoughts on why it is leaking.
First of all welcome aboard on this fine forum! As for the problem you are having? The one and only one of these I ever worked on was doing this same thing and the manifold was cracked. It was also worn where the sealing rings ride inside the manifold. I replaced the manifold and sealing rings and solved the problem. Sorry I can't be of much help. Perhaps some of these more knowledgeable 450 guys can help you further.

steering clutch problem
Thanks for the response, my pressure manifolds also had groves worn in them. as I said I replaced both of them along with sealing rings. Both pressure manifolds are still leaking. I was wondering if it could be the groves where the sealing rings fit in the clutch piston housing and how do you determine if they (clutch piston housings)are worn.
just to let everyone know I solved my problem with the leaking steering clutches. Both of my clutch piston housing were bad. The grooves where the sealing rings fit had side play and it was leaking past the sealing rings. I put good used clutch piston housing on and both are working.
I am running about 160 pounds of pressure is that enough to run the machine or should I rebuild the pump?
