JD 450D oil in bellhousing

Hello, this is my first post here. I have a 450D thatt started filling the bellhousing, starter, etc., with transmission oil. I was told to pull the engine, that there's a seal leaking. I have pulled the engine out, and I was wondering where this seal would be, and what I have to do to access it. The transmission is still in the machine. Any suggestions or guidance is greatly appreciated.

I am not wholly familiar with the 450D; however the HyTrans leak will could be from the input shaft seal of the HLR transmission that is still in your dozer.

I was wondering if I can change the seal without pulling the transmission, and where its located.....thanks

There is only 1 input shaft so you can't miss it.

Better check the input shaft bearing as it is probably the case of the seal failure.

If you are getting that much oil in the clutch housing and starter, it is probably coming from a leak that is under pressure. There is no seal that I remember on the transmission input shaft but that is where the transmission pump is located. There is a gasket on the cover of the counter shaft but that is not likely.

The hydraulic clutch valves are located on top of the clutch housing so I would look to see if any of those are leaking.

Of all the suspected places for a leak, I would look at the transmission pump first.

I can see the input shaft, but there's another shaft that runs crossways in front of it that has a big spring on it, and operates the throwout bearing. It doesn't look like there's enough room to take that shaft out with the transmission still in the machine, but I was hoping somebody on here would know how to approach this, as I don't have any manuals. I'm just stumbling in the dark, so to speak.

OK here is my wild stab in the dark-

That much oil you should be able to see where it has come from. Fix a drink or grab a couple cans of beer and pull up a chair so you can see in there and just look for a couple of cans are gone. You will get bored out of your mind, but if you are not familiar with how leaks are just chalk it up to another class in the school of life.

Now -sometimes- the oil will show up under UV light so if you or a buddy has a UV light (some fancy flashlights have them so you can theoretically use them to follow blood trails in the dark, well that and supposedly scorpions show up in UV) or if you have a bug light with a black light you can try that, but put a light down there and see if it tells you anything.

If you give up, you can try posting pictures but it is not the same as being there.

Hope that helps! If not, well at least I gave you an excuse to down a couple of beers!

Frame removal

I think your next step is to remove the frame sections. Have you removed your loader or Dozer assemblies yet. We find it best to do a complete strip so you have lots of room to work.
