440 in CA on govt auction
If it were closer I'd bid on it. Stuff at these auctions often goes for scrap price.

"The Acquisition value shown represents the original price paid by the government for the item(s) listed - $22,000."
WOW, no wonder our government is in so much debt. If they paid anywhere near $22,000 for this unit, some seller got rich!!
It is likely a 1960 due to the center throttle. Some wise one ruined the semi grousers by welding grouser bars to them. That places so much load on the U/C of a loader crawler when the bucket is full and you make a turn. Chances are the most expensive U/C components are ruined or need replacing.
A decent parts crawler at best, if ytou are set up to part them out.

By my count 36 link chains with lots of room to move the front idlers forward. Lots of wear on the pin bosses. Five speed tranny with reverse locked out. I would like to have that ripper on one of mine. A looooong way from west Texas.

I am more concerned with the fact that the operator has the engine at full throttle.

Celsesser I am well aware of how a detroit is run. Yet a tractor does not need to be turned at the highest throttle to be able to work. Detroits work best at around 1500 rpm. Mind you I drive tractor trailers. Anything above 1500 rpm is a waste of fuel. Yet the operator had it at full throttle just to use it? To me this sends up warning flags.

I think in some applications, the 53 series is spun up a lot higher than Deere specced them at, and the power rating the 2-53 is at in a 440 is the absolute bottom of the HP range it is rated for. Seems to me the 4 valve engine were rated in the 50HP + range.
Running at rated RPM would not worry me at all, we have tractors on the farm that have 10,000 hours on them from 1900-2100 RPM day in and day out.
Yes, there are definitely situations where we run reduced RPM, but never at high loads like heavy tillage, and when we run deduced RPM, never as low as 1500 RPM unless it is on something like an auger with minimal load.

I'm not sure if it applies to the detroits at all. But on all of the newer deere diesels I work on (I'm a mechanic at a deere construction dealer) the ones with lots of idle time, or low RPM work time are full of soot when you get into them. The ones that are typically ran full out with very little idle time run much more smoothly at higher hours and are cleaner inside.
Is that typically on the EGR engines?

All the newer 60 series detriots will auto shut down if left to idle past 30 min. you have have to set them on a fast idle to prevent the auto shut. even the older 2 cycle detriots idling wasnt good for them. i was told by waterous its was due the formtion of sludge and harmful contanimants. they recommended picking up the idle speed if the engine was needed to run at low rpm for extended periods like on our mixer trucks when unloading.

The reason I have always heard for high idle is lower oil pressure, and potential camshaft damage as a result. This also goes back more than a few years, so newer stuff may have more reasons.
