Housing and living costs in the midwest and upper-midwest are in no way comparable to what it takes on our eastern seaboard.

When you work it out a guy working an 8 hour shift plus an hour for lunch plus drive time is most likely for a lot of people close to an 11 hour day. So they leave before the kids get up and are home just in time to put small ones in bed. So they are off on the weekends. So look at a 21 day time frame they really get to see the kids for a max of 6 days. Now take off for time with the boys, a game, fishing or running errans. These guys are home 8 1.2 days or so. They can get the running done while the kids are in school. They really have time to spend with them and can actually devote more hours to them. Heck they got it lots better than I did as a soldier, out of the house at 5am, home about 6 pm, deployments and training. For crap pay......wish they had been drilling out there when I joined the Army to support my family.JD440ICD2006 wrote:Sounds like a decent income, but factor in the time away from family and friends that has no price tag and that time cannot ever be replaced.
Many people can make an income that will provide them a comfortable life and not be gone all the time.
