Frozen Pins Joy Ride #4

Post by Frankdozer » Mon Mar 18, 2013 6:06 am

In celebration of St. Patty's Day, I fired up my JD and went out to follow the snowmobile trails on my land. On my previous trip #3 I followed the logging roads. Mind you, I didn't go on nor will I, the public ITS Trails. Just the trails on my land that I cut in over the years to get to the ITS. Total trip about 3 miles over terrain that sometimes had me wondering if I should had stayed home and drank Guiness all day. The snow on the trails was hard as pavement and about a foot thick. I've read about the Sideways Ice Slide that dozers can do but never experienced it. Several times when turning on a icy slight downhill slope the dozer slid about 3 feet. It's a frightening experience for a novice and I'm glad I have seat belts. I used my GoPro to video the whole trip. Can I put videos on this website? Anyway, everything ran as it should. I'd say that 75% of the pins are freed-up. Here in Maine we have 10" to 16" of snow coming tonight into Tuesday so Wednesday I'll go for another scoot thru the woods and hopfully free up more frozen pins. Thanks for listening to me babbling on. Frank

Not babbling, just fun. As you experienced, those sideways slides have a pucker factor. If you hit a rock or stump going sideways, the machine can tip, so be careful. My machines are always caulked to reduce these rides. If you get to a particularly hairy section of a frozen road, like a steep curve with a drop off, take a detour through the woods; the ground will most likely be softer and will hold the machine better. Have fun. Paul

The website can't store pics or video directly any more, hackers used it as a back door to hack the site once, so Jeremy removed that function. You can post on a picture sharing site and link to it though.

I find it interesting. Have always wanted to visit the great state of Maine.

It has now moved up on the "to do" list.
