what crawler to get next?
As you all probably agree these older crawlers are adictive,I have a 420 with 61 blade 3 point hitch and pto ,and a 420 with a henry loader. The first 420,my dad bought for $1000 about 20yrs ago and since had been competely rebuilt ,motor ,clutches etc.The blade and frame work,I rebuilt all the pins and bored out all the worn bores and installed harden bushings everywhere. The other one is almost finished , just finishing the loader. Also have 2 tractors a D and a M both restored. The question now is what to get next to restore,my dad passed away 3 yrs ago so I don't have him for advice now,he grew up around these since his uncle and father were john deere dealers at one time.I remember him not being very fond of the 1010's for some reason. What would be the best choice a 440 or a 1010, I would really like a 350 but I think they would be getting a bit to heavy to be moving with a 3/4 ton super duty. What is the difference between the 440 and 1010?Thanks Steve
58 420c w 61 blade and 3pth and pto,57 420c w loader,48 D,48 M,Allis D-15 and a Super Duty to haul these!!!!
440 and 1010 are quite similar. Undercarriage is about the same, 1010 is 4 bolt pads instead of 2 bolt. 440 has a clutch type reverser, 1010 a full hyd reverser if either is equipped with a reverser. 2 cylinder vs. 4 cylinder of course. If you are used to the low RPM torque of a 2 cylinder, a 1010 can be frustrating, they are about all done at 1500RPM. 1010 is 4 speed only, 440 can be 4 or 5 speed. 1010 will weigh a little bit more, not significant though.
If something more rare is your focus, the 1010 Ag crawlers are neat, and quite low production. There are green 440's, but they do not have a different serial number tag from a yellow, and there are no production figures for them.
1010 engine parts are pretty much a Deere only item, and parts in general from Deere are much poorer for the 1010. I think a lot of the 1010's reputation is not deserved, and is part myth, and part truth, same goes for 2010.
Really it is kind of going to be your personal preference, whether one of the above, or another one of the two cylinder crawlers. Look through the pics page at the different models, maybe something will strike you.
