440 ic direction reverser trouble
so the boss wanted to play operator yesterday and now the 440ic has no power when backing up and the direction shifter seems to be hard to get into and out of the forward position and isnt engaging all the way into the reverse position. to start i thought id check the fluid level but i cant seem to get the drum plug out and there isnt a dipstick like on my uncles 1010. any ideas? thanks for any help keepin em' crawlin
Before I had a tool made to open bung plugs, I would use a pliers, wedge the jaws against the tabs on the plug, and twist the handles.
Something is up in the reverser, but fluid isn't going to fix the problem, if not an adjustment, it will be a mechanical problem.
Ask him if he was using the clutch while shifting the reverser?

i made up a tool last night to open the plugs and got that. so i think he wasnt using the clutch when he was shifting the reverser. im going to try the adjustment in the manual, but most likely its mechanical like you said. unfortunately it would be the death rattle for that machine. looks like a pretty big job and just getting the reverser rebuilt would be really expensive. bummer is i only paid $1500 for a running machine

Unfortunately you may have encountered the hard and expensive lesson to never shift a mechanical reverser without using the foot clutch. That is why many on here won't loan their crawlers to others that aren't familiar with them.
Sounds like the boss should be forking out the repair bill, but I know you probably can't push that issue.

The machine doesn't have to die due to the broken reverser. I think you can eliminate the reverser with a straight thru shaft. You'll have to use the reverse in the tranny which is probably the same speed as your second gear. Some one on here will know more about it than I do. gregjo1948

It is a lot of labor to remove, but may not be something that expensive to repair. Cost of eliminating the reverser is not cheap either, the shaft and coupler are getting harder to come by.
Take it apart, fix it correctly, drive it correctly, and it will last for a long time.

If you have to pay to fix the reverser or pay to make it a straight shaft, then I'd fix the reverser.
The little bit of pushing I've done I wish I would have a reverser. Since these old trannies aren't synchronized you have to be pretty much completely stopped going from 2nd to reverse and back.
If you don't go with the reverser let me know how much you'd want for it and the linkage.

Wow, that may be the first time that someone needing a part and someone selling one have been so close!

The reverser in forward is no different than putting in the straight shaft, either way to back up you have to use reverse in the transmission. So if your forward clutch pack is holding, like he said, leave it in forward, remove the shift lever and linkage, and operate crawler as if it has no reverser. You will still need to check and change the oil periodically.
