440 ic direction reverser trouble
Not necessarily, depends on serial number.
Regardless, the transmission has a reverse in it, so one of the slots had to make it go backward with the reverser in forward, period, no other possibility. 2nd and reverse are opposite of each other on the shifter.

Hi,
You have a reverse lockout on the shifter cover? You should have.*six* slots. Five forward. One reverse. Often times, there is a lockout plate for the reverse gear position so the lever cannot go into reverse.
There is a restriction against putting the trans in R and the reverser in R to gain an extra forward speed. So, there is usually that lockout plate with reverser equipped machines.
You *can* use the reverse in the transmission as long as you have the reverser in forward.

Had many issues with a reverser and lockout tab. Seen an actual tab on the shifter, a piece welded on the shifter, and also a bolt In the reverse slot. Reverse is all the was left and usually up. Send a pic of what is going on and we can help.
Bought a 440 this summer at an auction and forward clutches were out and it had a bolt in the reverse tab. I didn't have my tool set with me, so I used a pipe to beat off the bolt and used reverse reverse to go forward and load in my trailer.
Some were in amazement I had it moving forward since it was sold as is with reverser issues. I know you shouldn't use reverse reverse, but I only moved it 100 feet and on a trailer.

Reverse and 2nd are on the LH side of the shifter tower. If you don't have two slots there, then a tab has been welded in the shifter tower. Take the tower off, you should be able to see what has happened from underneath.
Do you have a service manual, there should be multiple pics of it in there.

Hi,
Well, using dual reverse to just move the machine is not what I think they had in mind when they made up that particular restriction. And, you were stuck otherwise. And, knew you had to deal with a bad reverser anyway. As always, rules have exceptions!
I hope John B's issue is simply R is locked out, as he can get back to work once he finds R in the tranny and leave that reverser work until later.,

thanks for all the input guys. i did pull the cover from the shifter tower and sure enough there is a tab welded in to lock out the bottom left position. however , i still cant seem to get her into that shifter position with the cover removed with the machine running or shut down. its like it isnt there. im still stumped, lucky for me i have a warm shop and its a good excuse to hang out up there & escape my wife's honey- do list down at the house. i wouldnt have bought an old crawler if i didn't like working on them, but i sure would like to be out in the woods getting something done

Might be sticky due to lack of use for that many years. If you have to, you can pull the shifter cover off and try it while on the bench.

i finally got it. there was also a spacer on the shifter shaft preventing the fork from engaging reverse( like a piece of pipe slipped over the shaft during assembly at the factory)so i took it apart, removed the spacer, put it back together and i now have reverse. ill still have to tear it down and get the reverser rebuilt. i need that low gear reverse around here, much of my logging is in steep country. but, at least i can load trucks on the flat landings. thanks again everyone. im sure ill have more q's soon
