1010 steering clutch assembly
I am installing a new steering clutch, but I can get the assembly to go in. The brake band does not sllide over it and gets push back. Is their a trick to this? Can it be loosen from the top? Also where can I get a service manuel for it. I have only been able to locate a parts manuel. Thanks
Ebay has a few manuals http://www.ebay.com/itm/John-Deere-1000 ... 33856a0aeb

Make sure you set the finger height on the pressure plate to the right height first before you reinstall it. (often overlooked and learned the hard way ). and I would back off the brake band some first on the top so it will make it easier to slide it over.. and by all means get a manual. You can download it right from JD (of course for a price lol) but it works out well . good luck and let us know how you make out.

Thanks for the info, I am going to download the manuel from the John Deere website.
Hi icfrace, let me know how you make out on this. I live a couple minutes away and have done this a couple of times.
Loosening brake band helps I think it is a 3/4 inch wrench to loosen the brake band bolt. I use a demo bar which is about 1/4 inch thick and slide it between the clutch and final drive housing and pry a little on the edge of the steel band to help set the brake band on the bottom of the hub.
I am assuming it is catching at the bottom and not going over the assembly correctly.
Good luck

Not sure how the 1010 is, but I was having the same problem on my 440 so I ended up putting the band on the drum and then sliding the final on. This doesn't work very well if you have big hands because you have to hook the brake band into the steering linkage through the inspection hole at the top once the final is on.

Thanks, I see you are from Danville. I thought I could just loosen the band. I downloaded the service manual today, so hopefully I will get it together shortly. Thanks everyone for your help!!
