350B Diesel engine oil priming

Post by Marcd » Thu Feb 20, 2014 6:30 pm

Does anyone know if there's a way to pre-prime the oil in a JD 350B diesel engine before starting it? I have a 350B that's sat for 20+ years. It's now pretty much ready to start, but I'd like to pre-prime the engine oil so I don't start it dry. Thank you.

You could take off the wire to the injection pump solenoid and crank the engine over till you see oil pressure, just don't over heat your starter. good luck
thanks Paul

Thank you. This is what I had thought to do, but was hoping there was a better way - like the remove the distributor and turn the oil pump with a drill like you can do on gas automobile engines. I looked at the manuals and didn't see a good way - the other thing I thought of was to pump the oil into the port for the pressure sender when I change the oil before I start it.

if you can rig up a pressure pot with oil and pull the oil pressure switch and give her an IV that is the best but if you pull the wire off the pump and crank as said above ... and spray some WD40 directly into intake as cranking

Oil priming

My dad uses a 12volt hydraulic unit and pumps oil in thru the oil pressure sender gallery. If you remove the valve cover you known the motor is lubricated when you get oil coming out of the valve train.
