40c - Clutch Dragging?
I've noticed recently that the clutch is starting to drag on my 40c. If I start it in neutral I have a heck of time getting it into gear without severe grinding. However, once in gear I can drive, then clutch and shift between any gear and reverse without an issue. Clutch does not slip, and machine runs, drives, and pushes fine.
This is a big problem, as I have a Carco winch that runs off the trans input shaft, so with the input shaft not disengaging in neutral I can't engage the winch without that grinding.
The machine has been sitting for awhile, so it may loosen up when I start running it again in the fall. However, I am concerned that it could be something with the pressure plate. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Hi,
There is a tip on the trans input shaft, called a pilot shaft. It sits inside a mating hole in the center of the crankshaft. Could be dirt, crud, rust, etc binding the pilot shaft in the bushing some.
Might be some rust scale on the flywheel and pressure plate, too. Although this would 'burn off' in short order when using the machine and then the problem automatically goes away.
You do have 90 wt gear oil in the trans, right? I have seen where some folks use hydraulic oil in the old stuff by mistake, and then have this issue as well. And, if they keep running hyd oil, they have a lot more serious issues before long......

I'm guessing clutch disk has been over torqued somehow and has a kink in it, which will disengage the tractor from driving, but still will cause just enough pressure to spin the shaft and grind the gear when in neutral to whatever tranny gear you are going into. Once in gear you can shift from gear to gear quickly.

You are going to have to split it to find out, no other way.
Check pilot bearing, rust or crud on the splines or clutch dust and crud build up on the outer surface of the clutch disc binds against the inside of the flywheel and creates drag. Just did one on a 440 gas.

Depending on attachments, engine is not all that bad. You can leave rad on and full of water, just drain it down below temp gauge port.
