When first started, the 350 has very little movement in forward or reverse. After just a minute it fails to move. Hydraulic levels are good, fluid is clean with no sign of moisture.
Prior to this there was some recurring light smoke coming from under the hood once the engine warmed up. But it moved (forward & backward) OK. Engine runs great.
Is there a pump that could fail that would cause this? If so: where is it located; how much of a challenge is it to replace it; and is it available from JD?
FYI: The unit has a heavy, side-to-side sliding JD backhoe mounted in the rear that adds considerable weight.
Little then no power in straight 350 loader
Reals, is this machine new to you ? "Hydraulic fluids are fine" you wrote, however are you checking the level of the fluid in the Reverser?,
(and for that matter, the transmission, finals, or, the power steering fluid if it has this option ?? If you are new to this unit,
)
Reverser is the most important one if it is not moving. Unless it is a 350c, then the steering clutches also need oil to operate.
What is the history of this machine to you ?
Scott
And by the way, welcome to the Forum.

Thanks for the replies.
The backhoe has been working fine and has never been off the unit.
This unit was acquired about 18 months ago by me (it is a 350 w/o letter designation). I also have had a 350B for about 6 years and I'm sure that I am checking the correct hydraulic level (but all are OK).
It seemed sluggish before the deep freeze hit Indiana in January but it moved w/o noticible problems (other than some minor smoking from under the hood). When it got warm last week, I cranked it up without effort. I backed it slightly down-hill for about 100 yards but when I put it in forward it just had a sense of movement forward but did not move more than a few inches. Ditto when I tried to back it up more.
If I start it now, it would move maybe 10 feet before it looses thrust. After that nothing until it sits a while.
I'm not a decent diesel fix-it guy bit it seems that a hydraulic pump is weak and after a slight effort the pump no long functions sufficiently to drive the unit.
Any thoughts?

It would be nice if it was as simple as a reverser filter plugged. Not sure if you know that the clutch pedal is not a clutch between engine and tranny. It is just a hydraulic disconnect of the reverser. So it could be out of adjustment as well(the pedal).
I think you are going to need to to pressure tests on the reverser and, many guys on this forum have more experience at than than me. Lots of posts here if you search the topic, be sure to let us know how it works out.
